Yesterday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission rejected St. Vincent’s Hospital/Rudin Management’s plan to demolish nine buildings within the Greenwich Village Historic District. The plan was vehemently opposed by the Village community, which required an extension of the project’s public hearing so that the hundreds of opponents wishing to speak could do so.

According to the Times, LPC Chair Bob Tierney said, “We must proceed extremely cautiously. The idea of any demolition in a historic district is an enormous step. It is time for everyone to be taking a deep breath and doing some rethinking.”

Today is the deadline to register for Saturday’s Livable Neighborhood’s Program, a project of the Municipal Art Society’s Planning Center. The program’s goal is to provide communities with the knowledge, tools, and training needed to transform local vision into effective plans. The program provides participants with in person training, a take home comprehensive community planning toolkit and access to a web-based network for ongoing to discussion.
