This morning, after listening to over four hours of (at times emotional) testimony from concerned New Yorkers, Mayor Bloomberg signed into law his bill extending term limits for local elected officials.

However, this may not be the end of the term limits debate. State Assemblyman Hakeem S. Jeffries will sponsor a bill at a special session of the State Legislature on November 18, requiring any municipality with term limits to hold a public referendum before making any changes to its term limits law. Because this law would apply statewide, it would supersede the City Council’s vote. As the City Room article outlines, 15 legislators have already pledged to support the bill.
