Today, Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Spitzer announced the selection of design firm West 8 as the lead desigers of the new Governor’s Island, which will include a new park and promenade, set to be completed in 2013.

According to the Mayor’s office, “The West 8 team’s competition entry highlighted the Island’s unique characteristics and harbor location, and incorporated environmental sustainability. It featured new hills created from recycled materials, and free bicycles for visitors.” Curbed has renderings , including those above and others, of the winning designs.

The design was chosen with public input, and the The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC), which is responsible for planning and redevelopment, has pledged to continue working with “advocates, community leaders and groups, and the public.”  For now, they are soliciting comments on their website.
